At Endeavour we are STOKED about all things outdoors, adventure and MedEd! We feel like we have landed feet first into the coolest medical specialty, and we're delighted that you've had the sense to join us. Expedition Medicine even has its own Oxford Handbook, so it definitely counts as a legitimate job, if any of your pesky relatives have been wondering...

We hope that as you're working your day (and night) jobs Endeavour might be able to help you scratch that adrenaline itch while you plan your next adventure. Every couple of months we hope to flood your inbox with recommendations: Podcasts, films, books, travel and activity ideas as well as expedition job postings.

We will also endeavour (ha!) to keep you in the loop about all things EM and hope to intrigue you and, hopefully, inspire your next adventure. In honour of our recent Alpine Medicine course and the last cold wave of the year this month's theme is Mountains.

PODCASTS WERE LOVING

The Rich Roll Podcast: Ep. 364, Hilaree Nelson

Hilaree was a ski-mountaineer and NatGeo's 2018 Adventurer of the Year. Hilaree's passion is palpable in the episode and will make you want to get outside. ASAP. Sadly, Hilaree  passed away in 2022, but the legacy she has left behind is epic.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

“Spirit of the Peaks” is a film about the struggle for balance between two worlds. For Hunkpapa Lakota skier Connor Ryan, skiing in Ute Territory has always raised questions about being in reciprocity with the land and its people. As a skier who connects with the land through sport, he empathizes with the injustices that have displaced the Utes and ongoing colonization, erasure and extraction impacting the Ute people. This story connects conflicted pasts to an awakening in cultural awareness that can create an equitable future for Indigenous people and skiers.

ENDEAVOUR UPDATE: Mountain Medicine in Morzine

Written by Jenny Baker, F3

In January, 12 budding expedition doctors joined forces in Morzine for the Expedition Medicine and Leadership course. The mornings were filled with skiing and piste-side hot chocolates before heading back to the chalet for scenarios and discussions in the afternoons. The snowy wilderness and woodlands behind the chalet provided the perfect environment for simulated scenarios. These all built on the pre-course lectures and allowed students to deepen their learning. Evenings started with fireside wine and an inspirational talk from one of the course’s leaders followed by a three course meal. Delegates ranged from medical students to specialist anaesthetic and paediatric trainees, and from expert skiers to those that had only skied once previously, but all shared a passion that built connections and friendships that will hopefully remain for many years to come!

Topics covered included:

  • How to plan an expedition / responsibilities of the expedition medic
  • Mental health on expedition
  • Managing an injured casualty in the snow
  • Splints, slings and packaging a casualty
  • Taping techniques
  • Nutrition and safe hydration on expedition
  • Ethics, sustainability and global health

ENDEAVOUR UPDATE 2: Alpine and Expedition Medicine in Practice

Written by Persia Bowater, F2

Five delegates attended the altitude and expedition medicine in practice course for a jam packed week of ski touring, staying in a mountain refuges (huts), and learning all about medicine in the mountains. The interactive teaching included multiple scenarios, where in one we saved one of our faculty from having been buried in an avalanche, and in another we treated them for a crampon inflicted arterial bleed. We spent the week with a fantastic and hugely knowledgeable local High Mountain Guide, Guillaume, who patiently and safely steered us away from the more dangerous slopes and directly to the best powder. We spent our evenings discussing the in and outs of expedition medicine, hearing stories about cases on the job from our experienced faculty, Nathan and Francis, and eating too much cheese! As we left, myself and the rest of the delegates were already planning our next trip, (a bike packing adventure to the Outer Hebrides) and our next steps to becoming an Expedition Medic at altitude!
