Climbing Up Kili - a (Mis)adventure
Written by Iain Doig, Endeavour Faculty
Most people can think of a more enjoyable experience than dragging twenty teenagers on a 7 day hike up to 5895m, but that was me in Feb 2023 going up Mt Kilimanjaro. Learning on Day 1 that most of the teenagers had never packed a hiking bag or stayed in a tent certainly added to the fun. Throw in having to medivac the team leader from the summit as she severely dropped her sats and you’ve got a good overview of my trip. Joking aside however, I did have an amazing time and certainly learned a lot both from my experiences and from the mountain leaders (I finally learned how to properly use hiking poles rather than just chucking them down the mountain). Watching the team grow into the challenge was another highlight, with many of the kids saying they would try to get outdoors more after the experience.
