PODCASTS WERE LOVING • WHAT WE'RE WATCHING • READING RECS • ENDEAVOUR UPDATE • COURSE SIGN UP

Our fingers and toes are beginning to thaw, the colourful fleeces are starting to come out and the crampons have been replaced by our trustiest waterproofs. Can you feel it? Spring is finally springing!!!

It's Shoulder Season and we are here for it. You can get in the last bit of winter snow, the water is tempting to dip into and spring hiking is all the rage!!! Still feeling lost about how to fill your time through this (occasionally awkward) season though (Do you swim?? Do you ski??)??!

No problem - keep reading because we have got you covered!!

PODCASTS WERE LOVING

The Good Life Project - Colin O'Brady

What would make someone strap a sled loaded with 375 pounds of food and supplies onto their body, then drag it across a stormy, windswept, frozen landmass at the bottom of the earth for 54 days in brutal subzero temperatures, just to say they did it? Colin O'Brady is a 10-time world record breaking adventurer who wants you to get out of your comfort zone and find some purpose! An interesting and inspiring listen (although still not convinced I want to solo trek across Antarctica)

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

Sadat Kawawa - The Way of the Wildcard

In January 2018, Unleashed, the world's most extreme kayaking competition, made its debut in Uganda, bringing with it a bevy of A-list athletes including the legendary Dane Jackson. Local boy, Sadat, tests himself against the elite of the elite across some of the most monstrous rapids on the planet. A quick, fun watch!

READING REC

Waterlog - Roger Deakin

A lovely account of a travel author's journey to swim his way across the British Isles. Poetic, effusive and certainly guaranteed to make you want to pop on your togs and head out to any (??? all??) water!

Climbing Up Kili - a (Mis)adventure

Written by Iain Doig, Endeavour Faculty

Most people can think of a more enjoyable experience than dragging twenty teenagers on a 7 day hike up to 5895m, but that was me in Feb 2023 going up Mt Kilimanjaro. Learning on Day 1 that most of the teenagers had never packed a hiking bag or stayed in a tent certainly added to the fun. Throw in having to medivac the team leader from the summit as she severely dropped her sats and you’ve got a good overview of my trip. Joking aside however, I did have an amazing time and certainly learned a lot both from my experiences and from the mountain leaders (I finally learned how to properly use hiking poles rather than just chucking them down the mountain). Watching the team grow into the challenge was another highlight, with many of the kids saying they would try to get outdoors more after the experience.

Iain is working as ED Registrar in Bristol with an interest in Global Health and Expedition Medicine. If you are wanting to hear more about Iain's Kili trip or are interested in some mountain medicine experience drop us a line.
